Dedduwa is a coastal village located around 65 km south of Colombo, Sri Lanka . Blessed with a natural lake and associated rich bio-diversity, Dedduwa offers ample opportunities for tourism sector as rightly identified by the government of Sri Lanka. Southern Province Development Board is mandated to regulate and safeguard the development schemes of south, and Dedduwa Lake Project is a deserving candidate for furtherance under the theme: social and economic development. Dedduwa Development Zone is the 1,800 acres of wetland (comprising ~1,300 acres in land and ~500 acres in water body) located east of Bentota. The objective of this assignment is to provide inputs to Environmental Impacts Assessment Report and to verify that areas demarcated for waterways and land for development are sustainable and will have least impact on the environment. Scope of the Work to be conducted is briefly described below. The planned development work requires a moderate technical study to support the proposition. The technical study for which LHI proposal is developed thus includes:
a. Review of all available reports and surveys
b. A baseline topographical and bathymetric survey of area
c. Flow measurements of Bentota river and feeder canals of Dedduwa lake
d. Evaluated High Water Level of the lake and overflowing to adjacent areas
e. Carry out hydraulic modeling of dredged and filled configuration to evaluate effects of such dredging and filling, and adequacy of water area.
f. Evaluate natural flushing of the waterways and possible stagnation
g. Provide technical inputs for EIA studies for Hydrology, Topography, Hydraulic Impacts, Erosion, Siltation and Sediment Runoff.
h. Evaluation of hazard maps as drawn up in the study on “Hazard analysis for the sea level rise in the south-west coast of Sri Lanka” and recommendations on mitigation measures to be taken on effect of sea level rise in the project area.
