Allai scheme is located at the tail end of the Mahaweli System and it has agriculture area of around 10,200ha. The main source of water to irrigate this scheme is Mahaweli from where water is diverted to Mavil Aru Anicut via Kandakadu Aru. Kandakadu Aru becomes dry during severe drought and water from Mahaweli Ganga is not naturally flowing into this canal due to bed level difference. Therefore a diversion structure was proposed to eradicate this problem and to ensure a continuous water supply to the Allai scheme throughout the year. The feasibility level in terms of technical, environmental, social, and economic was assessed for two types of structures (i.e. low crested weir and inflatable rubber dam) in the study.
